The Thunderbird Hunting Club and Lodge was founded in 1986 to provide private hunting memberships to individuals and corporations looking for quality waterfowl hunting with easy access and no overcrowding or outside competition from guides. A long time ago the club recognized that the harvesting of waterfowl was really quite simple; you have to hunt exactly where the birds were feeding the day before. The formula for our success is; provide good habitat, limit number of members, properly manage both the waterfowl and hunters. Our main driver for the club is to manage for successful hunts and not to make a living off the club. No other club can boast a member ratio like ours regarding; members/acreage to hunt, members/blind locations, and members/goose roosts. In part, it is why we shoot birds.
The hunting properties are located 80 miles southwest of Houston near the coastal town of Palacios sitting on Matagorda Bay. The lodge is located to the north of the properties near the town of El Campo. The hunting properties consist of close to 20,000 acres of properly spaced DU projects, reservoirs, flooded rice fields, marsh, moist wetland units, flooded millet & grass fields, rice, milo, and plowed fields. Starting with the early teal season and finishing with the extended snow goose season, members enjoy a full six months of hunting opportunities.
Our unique draw system gives every member an equal shot at the best hunting locations every time a member elects to hunt. Imagine being able to hunt a field with thousands of feeding geese or being able to hunt a pond that has a couple thousand teal sitting on it! Even if you don’t get the “pick of the litter” the club is set up so that in normal years even last place draw still produces. But it is more than the harvesting, it is the Thunderbird experience; a quality outdoor experience in a well managed environment with superb members. Membership also includes year round housing at the lodge which has 25 bunks, satellite TV, full cooking facilities, barbecue grills, bird cleaning facilities, and high tower skeet shooting. Because of the lodge, great camaraderie develops whether it is between members sitting around the campfire sharing hunting stories, parents bonding with their children, or clients getting to know their vendors as trusted friends and partners in the business world. It all happens at THC.
After you bag your birds in the morning you have many options at Thunderbird Hunting Club. You can come back and just relax at the lodge and gear up for the next day’s hunt, go dove hunting in open seasons, book a guided quail hunt with us, schedule a Matagorda Bay fishing trip with Ray Sexton, fish on your own at the club’s private marsh lease, or hone up on your shooting skills on the high tower. Because your membership includes year round use of the lodge, in the off season the facilities can be utilized as lodging for fishing trips, retreats for the family, Boy Scouts, church, or company functions, retriever training, wildlife photography, and fishing in the reservoirs or marshes on the leases.
We communicate with the membership through our frequent THC newsletters and the “Scouting Report Line” which is posted every Friday afternoon with the specific bird numbers on the properties. The club provides all duck blinds and material. Most of the blinds have at least 100 duck decoys, all provided by the club. Your membership also includes guest privileges as defined by the package purchased and rules of the club.
