Santa Anna Hunting Area (SAHA) is a family run hunting preserve. Eldena and I run the day-by-day operations on the section size preserve (600 acres) which include: Pheasant, Chukar, Hungarian Partridge and Quail hunts.

John R. Stearns started Santa Anna Hunting Area in 1986. He realized then that hunting was becoming less and less accessible and that hunting has never been free. The days of the knock on the door “Can I hunt” and the “cheap hunting lease” are gone.

I was fortunate to have been raised in a hunting tradition. As a boy, I don’t remember a time without the lick to my face by a dog. My family had wire haired terriers inside and English Pointers outside. Teasing a pointer with a quail wing on a pole, trying to find the next “snakefoot” was part of the summer vacation. In West Texas the end of the summer meant Labor Day and dove hunting, followed by quail hunting.

After high school, I worked for Dad stringing barbed wire around what would be Santa Anna Hunting Area. I was struck with the beauty and quiet of the Santa Anna Mountain then and even more now.

I worked the summers, building corrals, fences, barns, ranching, dry land farming, welding, carpentry and doing just about anything. I didn’t know it then, but I was getting the necessary education needed to run a preserve. All the while going to college in the winters to eventually end up with a MFA in 1981 in ceramics and sculpture. For the next six years I worked as a trim carpenter and remodel contractor in Austin, Texas

In 1988 my father approached me to help him run and and eventually take over the business of Santa Anna Hunting Area. His one-man operation was getting too big for one man. He had been incubating and producing all his own pheasant and most of his own quail. I agreed to it, just to get out of the big city and I was crazy about the land he owned and I grew up on. My father’s choice of the land around Santana Mountain to start a preserve cannot be understated.

For the first year I concentrated on building more pens, kennels and a bird processing facility.

During this time, Dad was teaching me the many aspects of raising game birds and hunting them, after this expansion we’ve remodeled many times. This was such an exciting for me, so much to learn, to build, trying new things, and we had to get it right. Hunting is such an innate and universal sport. With the proper mix of birds, dogs, cover and personel you can create an outdoor experience as old as time itself.

Santa Anna Hunting Area became incorporated in 1994 and Saha Inc was born. Dad has stepped back to doing the books and still hunts with us.

Eldena and I were married in 1998. Her experience in the gamebird business began in 1982. She brings a wealth of information and experience to Saha. I am so lucky to partner this business with her. Besides raising birds, she trains dogs and guides hunts. She is very committed to the hunting tradition.

In 2002 we updated the hatchery to a “state of the art” facility and Saha’s is NPIP certified and A1 Clean. Now, we are enlarging the dog kennel area to include a training ground. I guess it’s easy to say that we are only limited by our imaginations, time and finances

A Rich Legacy…
In 1947 Bud Warren started the Warren Ranch and he and this horse Leo became an integral part of American Quarter Horse history. Leo lived until age 27 and for years after his death remained the leading sire of Register of Merit producing broodmares. Follow these links for more information about Leo. http://www.foundationhorses.com/leoped.htm
http://www.horsesonly.com/pedpower/legends/leo.htm
(To return to our site from this link, click anywhere on our Warren Ranch banner at the top of the page.) My father, Leo and two other sires that stood at our ranch, Jet Deck and Sugar Bars were inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame at the headquarters in Amarillo, TX. and this past January 2005 Bud was honored by being inducted into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. For over 50 years the Warren Ranch has been dedicated to improving bloodlines through selective matings and continues that commitment to this day.

LEOTA W. was the reason Bud purchased Leo in 1947, her dam Swamp Angel was in foal to Leo when dad purchased her in a Tulsa sale and when the filly arrived my father knew she was special. He tracked Leo down to Fairfax, Oklahoma and found him standing in a muddy Hog pen his match racing days clearly over but another destiny ahead. Leo was purchased for the sum of $2500 a tidy price in post war days of the late forties.

SUGAR BARS was an impressive son of Three Bars purchased as an outcross for Leo’s offspring that added a blend of eye appeal and performance to dominate the early Quarter Horse years. One of the most outstanding products of this genetic combination was Otoe a champion on the track and show arena.

JET DECK was a bay colt by Moon Deck TB and Miss Night Bar that Jay Chambers of Littleton, CO purchased through his trainer Wilbur Stutchal and campaigned at California race tracks. At age two he was Champion Two year old, Champion Stallion, and the leading money earner for that year. As a three year old he was World Champion, Champion Stallion, and Champion 3 year old colt before retiring to stud service. Because Wilbur had trained for Bud Warren as well, he recommended the Warren Stud farm to Mr. Chambers and Jet Deck remained here until his untimely and mysterious death in 1971. Jet Deck was no less spectacular as a breeding stallion and received five championship awards and sired nine Champions prior to his death one of which was another great sire in his own right, Walter Merrick’s Easy Jet. The renowned Jerry Wells of Purcel, Oklahoma took Jet Deck on the show circuit and proved the colt to be a halter Champion to add to his list of remarkable achievements. Jet Deck was found dead in his paddock August 25, 1971 from a lethal injection of barbituates from unknown assassins.

Today…
The Warren Ranch breeds registered Black Angus cattle, is licensed in Oklahoma and New Mexico in Real Estate Brokerage, and hopefully one day will find a way back to the winner’s circle. If you’re in the market for quality cattle or Real Estate please contact us . Pictured below are Orren Mixer, my mother, her dog and myself in 2000 just before her death. The painting of Sugar Bars featured in this photo is on loan and display at the American Quarter Horse Museum in Amarillo, Texas.

The Wises have earned their reputation over the years for providing dove-hunting opportunities second to none. Hank has guided and managed dove hunts since his graduation from Texas Tech University in 1978. Its only natural he chose this profession in that many decades ago his great grandfather was drawn to the Rockwood area from his native Louisiana to find better hunting grounds. Hundreds of lucky hunters will experience the best Texas has to offer in terms of carefully selected hunting sites throughout the county. Hank and his guide staff spend untold time making sure they place their hunters where the highest concentrations of dove are as the season elapses. Darla and the lodge staff make sure the food and lodging will be a memorable experience. Add in the chance to see your old friends and meet new ones and you can see why Centennial Lodge is where experienced hunters want to be.

Our family began arriving in Callahan County, Texas in 1877. In that year, J.B. Cutbirth drove his herd of cattle onto that soil. This was the beginning of his permanent land possessions in Texas. He had left home as a boy of nine years old to begin ranch work. By eleven, he was driving herds into Kansas, and by the age of sixteen, he had purchased his first beef cattle.

The Cutbirth-Bonner family is today in its sixth generation of ranching. The years have not diluted the family’s love of the land. Presently, the great, great grandchildren of Mr. Cutbirth are developing programs of wildlife management and conservation. We welcome the serious hunter to come enjoy a beautiful part of Texas that offers the excitment of game fence Whitetail hunts and the challenge of open range Whitetail hunts. We also offer guided Rio Grande Turkey hunts and Mourning Dove hunts.

The Smith Family takes great care in providing Habitat for the migrating Morning Dove. They go to these great lengths so that their clients have the best possible wing shooting in the state. The Smith Ranch sits smack dab in the middle of the Morning Dove’s migration rout to south Texas and Mexico.
In fact, the sole reason this land was purchased years ago was the unbelievable dove hunting that goes in this special part of Texas.

The Smith ranch sits in a valley just one mile north of the Colorado river and is surrounded with hills that are covered with roost trees.

The hunting is always good so bring you family friends and clients.

Hall?s Bayou Ranch, Inc. was founded on April 7, 1943 when three friends and business associates, R. T. ?Bob? Briscoe, Virgil McGinnes, and Phil Davant, purchased the property.Bobbie B. Moore – President of Hall’s Bayou Ranch Although all three have long since passed away, the ownership of the Ranch remains in the hands of members of their families. Our current President, Bobbie Briscoe Moore, is the daughter of Bob Briscoe, the original Managing Partner.

Originally, the primary focus of the Ranch was rice farming, using water from the then recently completed Briscoe Irrigation Canal. However, since rice fields must lie fallow two out of every three years, cattle ranching played a significant role in the operation.

Over the decades, the Ranch has had to evolve to survive the changing economic conditions. In the 40’s and 50’s, rice was ?King? along the Texas Gulf Coast, and the area was basically an agricultural region, with as many farming families as not. At that time, we had as many as twenty independent tenants operating on the Ranch, as well as our corporate activities. Since then, we have seen the virtual extinction of the family farm, and the region has become almost exclusively suburban. While the changes have not always been easy, we have, obviously, survived. Some of the strategies employed over the years have included changing our crops, modifying scale of operations, promoting oil and gas production, and other alternative land uses.

Hunting has occurred on the Ranch since its inception. Over the years, its role has changed. In some periods, we allowed informal day hunting, where hunters paid a fee as they entered the gate. At others, there have been several different forms of clubs, with varying degrees of formal structure. In the mid-90?s, management realized that hunting represented a largely under-rated source of income, and began to take steps to maximize its potential.

Today, hunting represents a significant income source for the Ranch. Our development policy dictates that we reinvest significant amounts of capital each year for improvements to enhance the ecosystem and our other facilities. These improvements should, in turn, increase our revenues.

In gathering information for preparing this site, I was talking to one of the guides. He said to me, ?This is the only company I know that will promise you something and then give you more. They promise a new 30-acre pond, and a month later you have that and three new flooded fields.?

Respect for the land and love of the wildlife motivates our staff to these exceptional levels of performance. Over the years, conditions will only continue to improve. We invite you to become a part of our enthusiastic family.

I’m Tim Milligan, and along with my wife Melissa, my two kids, Aidan 13 and Abby 11, and a bunch of great gundawgs, we’re responsible for most of this. I couldn’t do what I do without each of them and each of you.

High expectations: We take a lot of pride around here in being a small family run hunting operation with no desire to grow beyond our means. The goal has always been to grow at a rate we could handle and still maintain a high level of service. It’s not always easy to reel in my own enthusiasm, but I believe keeping this thing in perspective has helped us be able to provide a consistent product to our hunting clients.

What it’s all for: Job number one around here is to glorify God in all that we do. We enjoy what we do and realize how blessed we are to be able to do it. We strive to treat others the way we would want to be treated, provide the kind of service we look for and make every outing something memorable for all involved. We’re a family friendly operation and we encourage you to get your kids out in the field with you whenever possible.

I’d appreciate the opportunity to show you what’s different and special about Deacon’s Point. Feel free to call or email us any time if you have questions about what we do or when we’re available.
