2012, Was Our 100th Year Anniversary
Ranch History, by Mike Turk
The first section of land on which the Turk Ranch headquarters is now located, was purchased from the Jeffries family by Doc Turk on January 29, 1912. In 1914, my grandfather, Doc Turk, purchased 4 more sections of the ranch property in rugged West Texas from the T-5 ranch which was at that time owned by the Hicks family. This land, Located in southwest Texas, Terrell County to be exact, has been home to my family ever since. Doc and his wife, Effie, spent the rest of their lives trying to make a living from ranching the land. Having to survive droughts, the depression of the 30?s, and fickle market prices for wool, mohair, lambs, goats and calves was an incredible challenge. Other setbacks like various livestock diseases, screw-worms, and predators made survival difficult. They made it through it all and my parents, Charlie and Grace Turk, joined them in the ranching business. It was a wonderful place for me to grow up.
My wife, Rhonda, and I were able to return to the place of my roots in 1998. One thing that has made this place so special are the memories and the anticipations of family gatherings. It took many visits to other places for me to really appreciate the rugged beauty of the Turk ranch.
In the approximately 8800 acres we owned or leased, there are many quiet, secluded places to enjoy the birds, wildlife, stars, flowers, unusual plant life, fascinating rock formations, fossils, and many other things that attest to the mighty power and wisdom of God, our creator. However, we also have natural gas production on the ranch with many roads and equipment that to some detract from the natural beauty, but this gas production has helped to keep properties such as ours from being sub-divided and for that we are very thankful. In the fall of 2012, we were pleased to see the beginning of the second century of the Turk Ranch in the hands of another generation of the Turk family. Our son, Zane Turk and his wife, Lori have purchased the surface from Rhonda and I. Their daughter, Jade and her husband James Barkhimer are now living at the ranch headquarters and caring for the property. Rhonda and I have now relocated to Christoval, Texas to be near her parents.
